Abstract

The objectives were to evaluate the effect of a waste of nondisperse water-based drilling fluid (WDF) ongermination traits and seedling growth in corn (Zea mays L.) hybrid Himeca 95 and to compare WDFwith a chemical fertilizer (CF) for the above characters. Two soil types were used: savanna (sand limetexture) and “vega” (lime clay texture). Fertilization treatment were: a) without fertilizer; b) CFequivalent to 300 kg 15-15-15/ha and c) WDF equivalent to dosage of b. A split-split-plot design wasused with four replications, two sowing dates were main plots, the sub-plot were the soils andfertilization treatments were sub-sub-plots. There were not significant differences for germination at 8,12 and 36 days after sowing (DAS), with means of 96.33; 96.42 and 96.42%, respectively, neither formean number of total germination days, index of germination velocity and germination velocity, whitmeans of 3.3 days, 7.49 and 24.03, respectively. The biggest plant height at 8 DAS was obtained in thefisrt sowing date in WDF and CF, while at 36 DAS, they were observed in the first sowing date. Insavanna soil, the plants were taller in CF. Root length was larger in savanna soil and the heaviest shootwere found in the savanna soil in the first sowing with WDF. These results indicated that WDF did notaffect negatevily the seed germination and produced corn seedlings similar to those obtained with CF
